NEWS & EVENTS

Honors in Action
Similar to the college project, Honors in Action is a project that each chapter must undergo to achieve 5-star status. However, Honors in Action is primarily a research endeavor. Each chapter must utilize the 8 research topics given by Phi Theta Kappa in order to determine a research question. It is through collaboration with experts and further research that one creates a project.
Our 2017 Honors in Action project is oyster shell recycling. Omicron Alpha is cooperating with several restaurants on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to gather used oyster shells as data in a case study we will present to leaders in Government. Education, and Industry. The shells will be donated to the University of Southern Mississippi where researchers will cultivate spat (baby oysters) on the recycled shells as a part of their oyster repopulation initiative.

The College Project
Phi Theta Kappa requires each chapter to complete a college project every year in order to achieve 5 stars in the chapter rankings. A quote from Susan B. Edwards, Phi Theta Kappa’s Dean of Academic Affairs and Honors Programs, underscores the purpose of the college project. She said “The College Project is a great opportunity to foster communication with your college administration,” and our chapter is working to maintain this methodology within our campus.
Our 2017 College Project relates to the Collegiate Academy (CA) here on the Jefferson Davis campus. Our Vice President, Dr. Jonathan Woodward, met with our leadership to discuss how Omicron Alpha could coordinate with the college’s administration. We settled on the Collegiate Academy. It was decided that Omicron Alpha would assign mentors to the CA students to help get them involved in activities on campus. While these mentors are working with their mentees, Omicron Alpha is also hosting regular tri-weekly soft skill forums based on the information provided in the Five Star Competitive Edge on Phi Theta Kappa’s website.
